Urge suppression techniques

YOU are in control of your bladder. There are various things you can do to suppress your urge to void. Try any combination of these techniques:

  1. Quick flicks: tighten your pelvic floor muscles rapidly (3 to 5 times in a row) and repeat until your urge to void subsides. Practice pelvic floor muscle exercises, otherwise known as Kegel exercises, in order to do this well. 
  2. Distraction: this might be the best time to watch that movie trailer or music video, surf the web, or go holiday shopping. Sometimes a short distraction is all you need. 
  3. Tibial nerve massage: rest the heal of one foot on the ball of the ankle of the other foot. You can gently rub this area with your foot to massage the tibial nerve. Stimulating the tibial nerve sends signals back to your pelvis to reset your urge.
